1) Chest fold

The measuring point is located between the armpit and the nipple at the pectoral muscle. It is at about 1/3 of the distance between armpit and nipple, but closer to the armpit.

2) Belly fold

This measurement point is about 2 fingers wide from your belly button. The skin fold is measured vertically.

3) Thigh fold

This measurement point is located midway between the hip and the knee on the inside of the thigh.

1) Triceps fold

This measurement point is located in the center of the triceps. The measurement is made vertical.

2) Belly fold

This measurement point is about 2 fingers wide from your belly button. The skin fold is measured vertically.

Five steps to measure your body fat

1) For the determination of the body’s fat content, a so-called Skinfold Caliper is required!

2) First take the Caliper in one hand and spread thumb and index finger of the other hand, at a distance of about the length of a finger, over the desired measurement point.

3) Then pull your thumb and index finger together and you will receive a small fold of skin.

4) Next measure the thickness of this fold with the Skinfold Caliper, repeat this measurement - best would be, 3 times per measurement point and use the corresponding mean of each measure point (sum all 3 values per point and divide by 3), now enter this value in the correct line. Repeat this procedure for each measuring point

5) It is important to measure the values exactly at the indicated points, otherwise the results will be falsified! The exact location of each measurement point can be found,depending on the method, in the graphic above.

TIP: If you want to track your body fat over a certain period of time, you should always measure under similar conditions and if possible at the same time. This results in better comparison values. The best time to measure is in the morning, because after you get up there is less water stored in your skin.

Body fat measurements

One of the probably most accurate methods to determine the body fat percentage, is the skinfold measurement using a Caliper. In this category, there are different approaches for the calculation available. The Jackson-Pollock methods (3-Skinfold-Method and 7-Skinfold-Method) are considered as the most accurate in the body fat measurement using a Caliper. The 3-Skinfold measurement has the advantage, that it is a very accurate method and can be performed without any help. The measuring points are different between men and woman. For women, the 3-folds measurement Version 1 by Jackson-Pollock was selected, as an advantage is clear to see, that the fat content of the legs is also considered for the calculation. The 7-Skinfold measurement is slightly more accurate than the 3-Skinfold measurement, but this method cannot be performed alone. This measurement method is performed for men and women at the same measuring points. A relatively accurate determination of the body fat content can already be done with the 3-Skinfold method according to Jackson-Pollock.
